Nokia 8800 Review
The Nokia 8800, for sale since September 2005, is a fashion phone that, while lacking quite a bit in the features department, more than makes up for it in style. The pop up slider phone’s stainless steel body, which has been laser cut for precision, has an overall look and feel that just screams luxury and exclusivity. Build quality and Nokia’s attention to detail are absolutely superb - the Nokia 8800 for sale looks sleek and feels robust. The glass display covering the wonderful screen is reinforced and is scratch resistant as well.
Although a bit on the heavy side at 134 g (the 8800 measures 107 x 45 x 16.5 mm), this fashion phone feels great in your hand. The stainless steel, the slider mechanism, the screen and the black keypad makes the 8800 an aesthetic winner. This phone will certainly still turn heads more than two years after it was first released. Those same heads will also marvel at the 8800’s crisp and clear display if you let them get a closer look. It measures 31 x 31 mm and runs at a resolution of 208 x 208 pixels with support for 256k colors.
To further bolster the Nokia 8800 for sale’s air of exclusivity, the phone has a unique Nokia’s Series 40 interface. The phone comes with themes and ringtones unique only to the 8800. The ringtones were composed just for the unlocked Nokia 8800 but you would most likely want to just download your own as they are not all that special.
All this attention to detail with the Nokia 8800’s design has come at the expense of its feature set. The phone is lacking the multimedia features of other phones in its price bracket. Even with a discounted Nokia 8800 unit, you should look elsewhere - like the Nokia NSeries - if you need the multimedia capabilities.
The 8800’s built-in camera, which is hidden away when the slider is closed, is the first feature to suffer from the focus on style. The Nokia 8800 for sale only gives you a 0.5 MP camera which snaps photos up to a maximum QVGA resolution and records video at QCIF resolution at 30 fps. The second is the music player. It can only playback MP3 and AAC audio formats. Sound quality was disappointing - it wasn’t terrible but it is inexcusable for a phone in this price range. Although stereo Bluetooth is supported (which is a plus), it is hampered by the sound quality.
The Nokia 8800 for sale also features support for 3D games. Gaming on this phone is, quite surprisingly, pretty good. The games were fast and with the excellent screen made for an enjoyable experience.
Signal reception was excellent, as it should be. Call quality could have been much better with higher volume levels. Nonetheless, calls were pretty good on both ends. Nokia claims a talk time battery life of 3 hours and a stand by time of 8 days. In real world use, however, you should expect to charge the battery very often. The Nokia 8800 for sale ships with an extra battery to make up for the below average battery life.
All in all, the Nokia 8800 for sale is high fashion mobile telephony at its best. For all the features that it lacks it makes up for in head-turning looks. If all you really need from a phone is the basic features then why not do it in style.
